How to Write a Love Poem

Anyone can have a go at writing a love poem. Why - because you are writing using your thoughts, feelings and emotions, a testament from your heart. You don't need any fancy equipment, any training or qualifications and everyone experiences love. Love is universal. Anyone can buy a card, some flowers, a box of chocolates, a bottle of after shave, or pick up the bill after a meal out, yet not many have the time or will put in the effort to write a love poem. A love poem can be about true love or unrequited love. The poem may be about your partner, your family, your pet, your football team, your idol or someone who once caught your eye. A love poem may recount fond memories, a path not chosen, or what the future holds. The one thing a love poem guarantees is passion - after all, if that passion was missing, so would be the words or the emotions to create the love poem you want to write.

What is Love?

The first thing you need to do is to write a list of all the reasons why you love the person (or pet, or idol etc), their best assets, their quirks, the memories you've shared and the ones you'd like to create together. This gives you a wealth of material to start composing your poem with. Inspiration The next step is to research love poems to see if there is a particular style you like, form you would like to try or to simply help you find your voice by knowing what you don't like! There are many poetic forms and techniques, which lend themselves to the love poem. We have compiled a list of our top 5 poetic forms techniques, love quotes and famous love poems to help and inspire you. We've also thrown in a couple of examples that we've written to prove ordinary folk can write love poetry!

Writing Your Love Poem

By now you'll have an idea of the kind of poem you're going to write. When it comes to writing your poem, sit where you can relax and not be disturbed. If it helps, put on music, look at photos or recall your fondest memory to help inspire you. Find your 'zone' where it's just you, the pen, the paper and your words. Then get writing …

Editing - It's a Labour of Love

Read over your poem, change bits, chops bits out, move bits round, highlight the words or lines you love and work the rest up to that standard. Not many of us can write a fantastic poem first time. Editing is a normal part of any kind of creative writing. Sometimes it's good to leave your love poem for a day or two and come back to it with fresh eyes. If you want to, show your love poem to a friend for their constructive criticism. This is particularly helpful if they know the recipient.

Your Completed Love Poem

Remember, when writing this poem, the recipient is going to love the poem because it's personal, it's taken time, it's your words and it's heartfelt and sincere. If you're happy with your love poem then it's ready, because you're likely to be a harsher critic than the recipient!

Our Love Poem Examples

The One

As Night's shadows steal the light from the skies,
And I turn and look into your deep brown eyes,
I drown in the pool of love and affection I see,
But you dive in and rescue me.

You're my hero, my friend, my soul mate forever,
Through the good, bad and ugly, we'll always be together,
My heart beats your name and all my eyes see are you,
This love I feel is so pure and so true.

One day I'll leave this earth and up to Heaven I'll go
And we'll meet again one day, this I do know,
For when I met you, my life, it had begun,
For we found each other and for me you're the One.

My Love - A Triolet

My love, to me you're everything,
Your lips so tender and soft and sweet,
Your voice, as soft as an angel's wing,
My love, to me you're everything,
When I see you, my heart, it sings,
You're the best girl I'll ever meet,
My love, to me you're everything,
Your lips so tender, and soft, and sweet.
